Foundations, the next expansion for Magic: The Gathering, arrives Nov. 15 and aims at providing a fun, accessible experience for every level of play. The expansion draws from a variety of aesthetics and reintroduces some of the game’s most famous cards, which will be legal in all standard formats through 2029.
While Foundations will launch with a pair of new products intended to onboard new players, veterans looking to expand their collection may find some great additions in the typical spread of Booster Boxes and Bundles. We’ve outlined all of the products available in this expansion below and where you can pre-order them.
The Starter Collection is an introductory set unique to Foundations that’s intended as a guided tutorial to building your own decks. The $60 Starter Collection includes a modest spread of 387 cards, in addition to three Play Boosters, 13 double-sided tokens, a click-wheel life counter, and a card storage box. Out of the 387 cards included in this set, 36 will be traditional foil cards, with six borderless Lands, and ten full-art Lands.
If you’re looking to add some of these relaunched cards to your collection, or you just want the product that can introduce a new player to deck-building concepts, the Foundations Starter Collection is currently available to pre-order through Amazon for $57.66 or Best Buy for $59.99.
There’s yet another introductory box set in the expansion. It’s called the Foundations Beginner Box and it’s specifically aimed at teaching new players the basics of Magic: The Gathering. This generously sized, $30.99 box set contains a pair of 20-card decks, which frame a guided tutorial experience, in addition to eight Jumpstart Packs, which create a fixed roster of 160 cards to customize each deck. The Beginner Box also includes a pair of playmats and Spindown life counters.
While the cards featured in the Beginner Box may not utilize the entire lexicon of MTG keywords, players will still be introduced to concepts like tokens and counters in addition to some of the more straightforward concepts experienced in MTG. Right now, there is no better way to get someone who knows nothing about MTG to play the game confidently in about 20 minutes.
For more seasoned players, Foundations will still launch with a Bundle format which can be reserved on Amazon for $42.70, or from Best Buy for $49.99. The Foundations Bundle includes nine Play Booster Packs, 20 foil and 20 non-foil Land cards, in addition to a Spindown life counter and card storage box. The spread of cards included in the Foundations Bundle won’t necessarily guarantee that you have a playable deck, but it’s still the quickest way to expand your library with cards from the new set while also getting you some exclusive accessories.
Similar to previous MTG expansions, Foundations will launch with three different flavors of Booster Packs. The most basic version, the Jumpstart Booster, includes 20 cards in each pack. Each pack features a single card with anime-inspired art in addition to at least one card of rare quality or higher. Jumpstart Boosters are available to pre-order in a box of 24 packs from Amazon for $98.99.
Moving up the list, we have Play Boosters. These 14-card packs each contain at least 1 traditional foil card, with the possibility of up to four cards of rare quality or better. Play Boosters also have a chance to pull Mythic Rare cards featuring alt-frame art treatments. Play Boosters are available to pre-order in boxes of 36 packs for $136.79 from Amazon or $174.99 from Best Buy.
Finally, Collector Boosters contain some of the rarest cards available in the Foundations expansion. Each 15-card pack contains at least three borderless or extended art cards, and at least five cards included in each pack will be rare quality or higher. Collector Boosters are also the only place to potentially find Borderless Rare or Mythic Rare foil cards. You can currently pre-order boxes of 12 Collector Booster Packs from Amazon for $249.99 or Best Buy for $279.99.
